Recent research from the American Psychological Association highlights that short online videos designed to inspire and evoke hope can be just as effective in alleviating stress as traditional meditation practices. Given the rising levels of stress in the U.S., especially during busy seasons like holidays, finding quick and accessible stress relief methods is essential. The study involved over 1,000 adults during a four-week period, where participants were randomly assigned to different groups engaging in various activities such as watching inspirational videos, comedic clips, guided meditation, or simply scrolling on their phones.
The findings revealed that those who viewed inspirational videos or participated in guided meditation reported increased feelings of hope, which correlated with significantly lower stress levels days after the activity. Interestingly, feelings of hope appeared to have a lasting impact, helping reduce stress up to ten days later. Unlike laughter-inducing videos, which provided entertainment but no extended stress benefits, inspirational content fostered a mindset of perseverance and resilience.
Lead researcher Robin Nabi explained that hope acts as a motivational emotion that can influence how individuals handle adversity. When people observe others overcoming challenges in these videos, it cultivates a sense of possibility, thereby mitigating stress. The study suggests that integrating hope-based media content could be a practical tool for stress management, especially for those who find traditional methods like meditation difficult to maintain.
Nabi emphasizes that media use is often viewed negatively in stress discussions, but this research supports the idea that carefully curated media can be a beneficial part of stress relief strategies. Incorporating inspiring videos into daily routines offers a simple, enjoyable, and effective way to enhance mental well-being, particularly during stressful periods. This approach aligns with the broader concept of using media as a therapeutic tool, a concept gaining recognition in mental health practices.
