Short-form videos have become a dominant form of media consumption among children and adolescents, prompting concerns about their potential effects on attention span and cognitive development. This phenomenon isn’t entirely new; platforms like Vine popularized brief videos before the rise of TikTok, embedding rapid, engaging clips into digital culture. Despite their popularity, questions remain regarding how this media format influences attention, especially in school-age children.

Recent investigations, including a comprehensive survey conducted in suburban Thailand, shed light on these concerns. The study focused on children aged 6 to 12 years, a critical developmental period when attention-related issues, such as those seen in ADHD, often emerge. Researchers collected data from guardians on children’s screen time, specifically their use of short-form videos, along with behavioral assessments of inattentiveness, forgetfulness, distractibility, and difficulty maintaining focus.

Findings revealed that children averaged about 3.6 hours of daily screen time, with nearly half of that dedicated to short videos. Interestingly, higher use of short-form videos was associated with increased inattentive symptoms, independent of total screen time, and this relationship was more pronounced among younger children. The study also examined related behavioral issues, such as hyperactivity and oppositional behaviors, finding that while overall screen time correlated with these behaviors, short-video use alone did not show an independent association.

These results suggest a potential media-type-specific influence on attention, which could be bidirectional: children with existing attention difficulties may be more drawn to rapid, stimulating content, and such media use might further impair attentional capacity over time. The rapid pacing, high arousal content, and algorithm-driven narrowing of focus in short videos may overload cognitive systems, deplete executive functions, and disturb emotional regulation.

The implications are noteworthy, emphasizing the importance of balanced media consumption and the need for further research into how emerging digital content impacts cognitive development. While definitive causal links remain to be established, experts recommend adhering to existing media guidelines, promoting open discussions between parents and children, and considering media use reductions, especially for younger children or those with attention difficulties.

In conclusion, as short-form videos continue to proliferate, understanding their influence on children's attention will be vital for educators, parents, and policymakers. Continued scientific inquiry is essential to inform evidence-based guidelines that support healthy cognitive and social development in children.
