The findings suggest that higher engagement with screens—such as social media, video games, television, and online homework—is associated with increased risks of internalizing problems like anxiety and depression, as well as externalizing behaviors like aggression and hyperactivity.
The study highlights a bidirectional relationship: children experiencing emotional difficulties often turn to screens as a coping mechanism, which may further deepen their problems. Factors such as age, gender, and content type influence this dynamic; for instance, older children (ages 6–10) and girls tend to be more susceptible to socio-emotional issues related to screen use. Additionally, gaming and social media activities are associated with higher risks compared to educational or recreational screen time.
Experts recommend that parents monitor and regulate their children’s screen time carefully, employing parental controls and setting clear boundaries. Importantly, children experiencing emotional or behavioral challenges might need emotional support alongside restrictions. Programs designed to help parents handle both screen management and emotional issues could be beneficial.
This research underscores the importance of a nuanced approach to screen time management, emphasizing that understanding the complex, two-way relationship between screen use and emotional health can help foster healthier development for children. While the longitudinal nature of the studies brings us closer to understanding causality, it’s essential to recognize other influencing factors, such as parenting styles, that also play a role.
