White House Highlights Support for COVID-19 'Lab Leak' Theory on Updated Website

On April 19, 2025, the White House unveiled a significantly redesigned COVID-19 website, drawing attention to the controversial hypothesis that the virus may have originated from a laboratory in China. The revamped site now emphasizes the possibility that SARS-CoV-2, responsible for the COVID-19 pandemic, could have leaked from a Chinese research facility, specifically noting Wuhan as the location of the virus's first known case and the presence of China's leading SARS research lab there. The site features a full-page image of the President and criticizes previous pandemic policies under the Biden administration.
In addition to promoting the lab leak theory, the website targets scientific consensus and previous officials, such as Dr. Anthony Fauci, accusing them of supporting the “preferred narrative” of natural origin of the virus. It lists five points supporting the lab leak hypothesis, including Wuhan's research activities conducted at allegedly inadequate biosafety levels and the absence of convincing evidence supporting natural zoonotic transmission.
The theory, once widely dismissed as a conspiracy, has gained significant traction in U.S. political and intelligence circles. Agencies like the FBI and Department of Energy have expressed varying degrees of confidence in the likelihood that the virus originated from a lab, with the CIA recently stating it considers a laboratory leak as a more probable source than animal transmission. In response, China has denied such claims, calling them “extremely unlikely” and urging the U.S. to avoid politicizing the origin-tracing process.
The website revision has sparked reactions from experts and policymakers. Jamie Metzl, senior fellow at the Atlantic Council, acknowledged the importance of open investigation but warned against letting such efforts distract from critical work in controlling ongoing COVID-19 and long COVID cases. The site also criticizes early pandemic measures like mask mandates and social distancing, portraying them as misinformation propagated by former public health officials. It further accuses them of censorship collusions with social media.
This development coincides with broader changes within U.S. health agencies, including layoffs and restructuring plans announced earlier in April, which aim to reform how public health is managed amid ongoing political debates. Some critics express concern that the focus on the virus’s origins might overshadow efforts to combat current and future health challenges.
Despite the contentious debate over the virus's origins, the global toll of COVID-19 remains profound, with over one million fatalities in the United States and millions more worldwide. The updated website represents a shift in the political discourse surrounding the pandemic and highlights the ongoing divided perspectives on COVID-19’s true origins.
