NIH Director's Remarks on COVID-19 Funding Trigger Staff Walkout

NIH staff staged a walkout after Director Dr. Jay Bhattacharya linked NIH-funded research to the origins of COVID-19, amid concerns over funding cuts and research policies.
In a recent town hall meeting at the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH), tensions escalated when Director Dr. Jay Bhattacharya made controversial comments linking NIH-funded research to the origins of COVID-19. The meeting, held at NIH headquarters in Bethesda, Maryland, was disrupted approximately 27 minutes in when dozens of staff members walked out in protest. Video footage obtained by CNN shows Bhattacharya suggesting that the pandemic may have resulted from research partly funded by NIH, raising speculation that human activities and funding sources could have played a role in the virus's emergence.
Many of the protestors, primarily postdoctoral researchers and union members, saw Bhattacharya’s comments as accusatory and damaging. They responded with a planned walkout, intended as silent dissent, to pressure for a meeting with him to address broader concerns about work conditions, funding cuts, and policies affecting research productivity. Staff have expressed frustration over recent reductions in purchasing staff, staff layoffs, and a potential 40% NIH budget reduction, all of which have hampered their ability to conduct vital research.
Additionally, staff expressed concerns over new policies restricting grant recipients from sharing funding with foreign collaborators—an issue they argue could hinder efforts to prevent future pandemics. The White House's 2026 budget proposal includes an almost $18 billion cut to NIH research funding, partly due to allegations linking the Wuhan Institute of Virology to COVID-19 origins, a move supported by former President Donald Trump.
During the town hall, Bhattacharya also addressed sensitive topics such as diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) research, expressing skepticism about studies that attribute health disparities to structural racism without definitive proof. His remarks led to further controversy, especially after an audience member challenged his stance. Bhattacharya admitted to feeling upset over a lack of transparency concerning a recent large-scale staff layoff and criticized policies like Elon Musk’s requirement for weekly reporting of scientific achievements.
A week following the meeting, union members reported no response from Bhattacharya’s office regarding a follow-up meeting to discuss these ongoing issues, highlighting ongoing dissatisfaction among NIH staff. The incident underscores the ongoing debates about research funding, transparency, and the implications of political influence on scientific institutions.
