Mass Recall of Corn Dogs Due to Wooden Shards Presence

The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) has issued a massive recall involving approximately 58 million pounds of frozen corn dogs and similar sausage-on-a-stick products. This recall comes after multiple consumer reports of finding foreign objects, specifically wooden shards, embedded within the batter of these products.

The recall, classified as Class I—indicating a high risk of serious health consequences or death—was initiated by Hillshire Brands, a subsidiary of Tyson Foods, based in Texas. So far, five consumers have reported injuries related to the ingestion of wooden pieces found in the products.

The affected items include popular products such as "State Fair Corn Dogs on a Stick" and "Jimmy Dean Pancakes & Sausage on a Stick." Consumers are advised to check packages for specific identifying numbers like "EST-582" or "P-894," along with the product name, and to examine their packaging for relevant use-by dates, which range from March 17, 2025, to September 26, 2025.

These products were packaged at a single facility in Haltom City, Texas, and distributed nationwide to retailers, online vendors, school districts, and military facilities. Tyson Foods has requested that consumers either dispose of the recalled products or return them to the point of purchase to receive a refund. The company emphasized that the recall was conducted "out of an abundance of caution" to protect consumer safety.

The FSIS expresses concern that many of these potentially contaminated products may still be present in consumers' freezers or institutional settings. This incident highlights the importance of consumer complaints in identifying food safety hazards and preventing potential harm.
