Innovative Smart Bandage Monitors and Accelerates Healing of Chronic Wounds in Humans

Researchers from the California Institute of Technology have made significant progress in developing a cutting-edge, 'lab on skin' device—an advanced smart bandage capable of monitoring chronic wounds in human patients. Led by Professor Wei Gao, the team has designed a flexible, biocompatible polymer-based bandage that not only tracks wound biomarkers in real-time but also delivers targeted treatment to promote faster healing.
In 2023, the team demonstrated that their initial smart bandage could provide real-time data on wound healing in animal models while simultaneously speeding up recovery through the controlled application of medication or electrical stimulation. Building on this success, they have now shown that an improved version, named iCares, successfully samples wound fluid in 20 human patients suffering from chronic wounds caused by diabetes or poor circulation. This device continually collects and analyzes inflammatory and infection-related biomarkers, ensuring that the samples are fresh and representative of the current wound state.
The iCares bandage incorporates three microfluidic modules: one that removes excess moisture to facilitate healing, another that channels wound exudate for analysis, and a third that directs sampled fluid outside the wound. This setup allows the bandage to detect critical molecules like nitric oxide, an inflammation marker, and hydrogen peroxide, an indicator of infection, often days before symptoms become apparent.
Moreover, the system employs machine learning algorithms to classify wound conditions and predict healing times with high precision, comparable to expert clinicians. The device features a low-cost, 3D-printed sensor array and wireless data transmission to smartphones or other devices, enabling seamless monitoring.
The development of the iCares bandage signifies a leap forward in personalized wound care, offering real-time insights and timely intervention to improve healing outcomes for patients with challenging wounds. This innovation holds promise for reducing complications, infections, and treatment costs associated with chronic wounds.
