Health Experts Warn of Rise in Alcohol-Related Incidents During Easter Weekend

While heavy alcohol consumption is typically associated with summer festivities, recent data reveals a concerning trend: the Easter long weekend sees a significant uptick in alcohol-related emergencies in Victoria. Analysis of ambulance attendances shows that over Easter, more than 500 alcohol-related incidents occur, equating to the intensity of four Saturday nights in a row. This surge in incidents highlights Easter as a high-risk period for alcohol harm, contrary to the common perception that such dangers are confined to warmer months.

Research conducted by the National Ambulance Surveillance System (NASS) at Turning Point and Monash University underscores the gravity of this issue. In 2022, Easter Sunday ranked as the third highest day for alcohol-induced ambulance callouts, following New Year’s Day and the AFL Grand Final Day. Additionally, Easter Saturday also ranked among the top 20 days for alcohol-related emergencies.

The consequences extend beyond ambulance attendances, with a notable rise in alcohol and drug-involved road accidents. In 2022, ambulance records documented 15 alcohol-related vehicle incidents, a sharp increase from the usual Sunday average of six incidents, culminating in over 24,000 alcohol-related ambulance attendances for the year.

Victorian Coroner Ingrid Giles has highlighted the significant impact of alcohol on the community and calls for urgent reform. Experts, including Dr. Rowan Ogeil from Turning Point, emphasize the importance of mindful alcohol consumption during holidays like Easter. Dr. Ogeil urges individuals to support each other, plan transportation ahead of festivities, and recognize that support services are available and effective.

Given the data, Easter weekend presents a clear need for heightened awareness and preventative measures to reduce alcohol-related harm. The festive period, often perceived as a time of celebration, can unfortunately also be a time of increased risk, underscoring the importance of responsible drinking and safety planning.
