The Dangers of Drinking Bleach: From MMS to Aerobic Oxygen Supplements

Online claims promoting the ingestion of substances like Chlorine Dioxide—marketed under names such as 'Miracle Mineral Solution (MMS)' or 'aerobic oxygen'—are increasingly dangerous and misleading. These products, often presented as health or vitality boosters, pose serious health risks, including severe illness and death.

MMS is not just regular bleach; while bleach contains sodium hypochlorite, MMS contains sodium chlorite—a chemical that can be just as harmful. Ingesting sodium chlorite can lead to methemoglobinemia, a condition impairing the blood's ability to carry oxygen, and hemolysis, the rupture of red blood cells. It can also cause kidney failure and result in fatal outcomes.

When sodium chlorite interacts with stomach acid, it produces chlorine dioxide, a potent disinfectant used in sterilizing medical equipment and water supplies. Despite its antimicrobial properties, consuming chlorine dioxide is unsafe for humans. It can cause nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and in worst cases, bowel perforation leading to emergency death.

Using MMS as an enema or ingesting it directly damages the gastrointestinal lining, triggering cellular stress and potential long-term health issues such as chronic gut conditions. Moreover, inhalation or skin contact with chlorine dioxide can cause respiratory problems, skin irritation, and severe allergic reactions. Animal studies suggest that exposure may harm the nervous system, disrupt hormones, and impair brain development.

Some proponents falsely claim that MMS can be safely used as a mouthwash, despite clinical evidence indicating it’s no more effective than regular mouth rinses. More importantly, it damages cell membranes, disrupts protein synthesis, and harms the gut microbiome, essential for digestion and immune health. It also adversely affects cardiovascular health, potentially causing low blood pressure, fainting, stroke, shock, and a rare but deadly blood disorder called disseminated intravascular coagulation.

Furthermore, chlorine dioxide inhalation can inflame the respiratory tract, causing lung injuries and respiratory distress, especially with repeated exposure common in workplaces. People who ingested it attempting to treat COVID-19 have suffered severe lung damage.

Additionally, animal studies reveal that chlorine dioxide can harm the nervous system, leading to developmental delays, slow brain growth, and hormonal issues affecting puberty. Skin contact can cause irritation and even skin cell death, resulting in chemical dermatitis. Many claimed benefits of chlorine dioxide are based on unverified lab or animal studies, not human clinical trials, and it has no proven medicinal use.

In summary, the notion that drinking bleach or chlorine dioxide supplements offers health benefits is false and extremely dangerous. The risks include life-threatening conditions affecting multiple organ systems, severe injuries, and death. If you encounter products promising health cures with science-sounding language, exercise caution—these are often scams with serious health consequences.
