A novel bee-inspired microneedle technology promises pain-free, long-term drug delivery, transforming treatment for chronic diseases with safer and more comfortable patches.

Researchers from Chung-Ang University have developed a groundbreaking microneedle system inspired by the natural mechanism of a bee sting, aiming to revolutionize long-term drug delivery. These innovative patches, called Electrospun Web Microneedles (EW-MNs), are characterized by their soft, breathable, and flexible structure that can remain anchored in the skin much like a bee’s barb, facilitating continuous medication release with minimal pain.

Traditional rigid microneedles, although effective, often cause irritation and discomfort during extended use, limiting their practicality for chronic treatments. In contrast, EW-MNs are fabricated using an electrospinning process that creates a web of nanoscale fibers deposited onto metal microneedles. This fibrous layer mimics the barbed design of a bee sting, ensuring secure attachment to the skin for sustained drug delivery.

The team demonstrated the practicality of this technology by loading the patches with rivastigmine, a drug commonly used to treat Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases. Animal tests on guinea pigs showed that the patches significantly improved drug absorption, releasing more than twice the amount of medication over a larger area compared to conventional methods. Importantly, the patches caused little to no discomfort, and any mild skin irritation resolved quickly after removal.

Prof. Kang emphasized that, with further development, EW-MNs could transform drug administration by offering a safe, long-lasting, and patient-friendly alternative to traditional injections. The versatility of these patches could extend to various medical fields, especially benefiting elderly patients, children, and others who require safe, consistent, and minimally invasive treatments.

This innovative approach illustrates how nature-inspired designs can lead to significant advancements in medicine, making treatments safer, more comfortable, and more accessible for patients worldwide.
