BowFlex Recalls 3.8 Million Adjustable Dumbbells Due to Safety Concerns

Over 3.8 million BowFlex adjustable dumbbells are being recalled due to safety concerns after injury reports. The recall addresses widespread safety hazards linked to these popular fitness devices.
BowFlex, a well-known fitness equipment brand, has initiated a large-scale recall of over 3.8 million adjustable dumbbells following multiple injury reports. The recall specifically targets two models: the BowFlex 552 (52.5-lb adjustable dumbbells) and the BowFlex 1090 (90-lb adjustable dumbbells). The primary issue leading to this recall is the potential for weight plates to detach during use, which has resulted in over 100 reported injuries, including bruises, cuts, broken toes, and even concussions.
The adjustable design of these dumbbells, praised for convenience by allowing users to switch between different weights without needing a full set of traditional dumbbells, is also identified as a safety hazard by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). This safety concern has prompted the recall to prevent further injuries.
Originally sold under the Nautilus brand, which rebranded as BowFlex in 2023, the affected products were sold widely. Following BowFlex's bankruptcy in March 2024, the assets, including the recalled dumbbells, were acquired by Johnson Health Tech Retail.
Customers who purchased these dumbbells from Johnson Health Tech may be eligible for refunds or replacements. Those who bought from BowFlex are offered a prorated voucher and a free one-year digital fitness membership. The company has been reaching out directly to affected users. Despite these efforts, some consumer advocates express concern that full refunds should be provided without conditions.
For detailed information on the recall, consumers can consult the official recall notice issued by Johnson Health Tech. Safety priority remains essential, and consumers are advised to cease using these dumbbells immediately and follow the instructions for a refund or replacement.
