A recent study published in the Journal of Nutrition Education and Behavior highlighted the significant nutritional difficulties encountered by Ghanaian adolescents who are pregnant or have recently become mothers. The research, conducted across nine communities in Ghana's Central Region, involved focus group discussions with 35 participants aged 12 to 19, including pregnant teenagers and adolescent mothers. The study aimed to understand their attitudes and perspectives on nutrition, revealing critical issues such as food insecurity, limited access to nutritious foods, economic constraints, and cultural influences that impact dietary habits.

Lead researcher Dr. Christiana Naa Astreh Nsiah-Asamoah from the University of Cape Coast emphasized the importance of tailored nutritional support for this vulnerable group. The study identified five key themes affecting nutritional choices and infant care: overall health and well-being, infant nutrition practices, dietary habits, sources of nutrition information, and social support networks.

Findings indicated that adolescent mothers often struggle with adhering to recommended infant feeding practices, frequently relying on less nutritious street foods due to economic limitations. Many found it challenging to practice exclusive breastfeeding for six months, opting instead for early complementary feeding. Additionally, inadequate nutrition education and inconsistent social support further hinder their ability to make informed dietary decisions.

The study underscores the urgent need to strengthen nutrition education programs, improve access to affordable healthy foods, and support community-based initiatives that empower young mothers. These measures can help improve both maternal and infant health outcomes in socioeconomically disadvantaged communities.
