A recent survey conducted by the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine in collaboration with Morning Consult has revealed that 50% of U.S. adults are aware that adopting a plant-based diet can lead to improved health and help in preventing chronic illnesses. Despite this awareness, the survey highlights a significant gap in healthcare practice, as only 20% of primary care providers discuss these benefits with their patients.

The survey polled 2,203 adults between April 15 and April 16, 2025. Notably, 65% of respondents expressed willingness to try a plant-based diet if presented with evidence supporting its advantages. Xavier Toledo, a registered dietitian and member of the Physicians Committee, emphasized that the primary obstacle is the lack of guidance and support from healthcare professionals, which represents a missed opportunity to encourage healthier lifestyles and reduce the risk of chronic diseases.

Extensive research supports the health-promoting effects of plant-based diets. A 2023 meta-analysis involving over 2 million people found that diets rich in fruits, vegetables, legumes, and whole grains are linked to lower risks of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, cancer, and early death. Additionally, a large U.S. study from the Adventist Health Study 2 indicated that vegans and vegetarians have a significantly lower risk of early mortality, with vegans experiencing up to a 15% reduction in overall risk, particularly regarding heart disease.

Further evidence from a 2017 meta-analysis suggests that vegetarian diets are associated with decreased risks of cardiovascular disease and cancer, reinforcing the potential of plant-based eating to mitigate major health threats.

The survey underscores the need for improved nutrition education in medical training. The Physicians Committee offers various educational tools aimed at healthcare professionals and students to enhance awareness about plant-based nutrition. Furthermore, recent legislative efforts in New York aim to keep physicians informed about continuing education opportunities in nutrition, hoping to improve health outcomes for populations affected by diet-related illnesses.

For those interested in transitioning to a plant-based diet, the Physicians Committee provides a free Vegan Starter Kit, which includes recipes and resources, along with a directory of plant-based healthcare providers.
