Innovative Wearable Sweat Sensor Detects Stress Responses in Real-Time

A groundbreaking wearable biosensor called Stressomic can continuously monitor multiple stress hormones through sweat, enabling better stress management and health monitoring in real-time.
Recent advancements in wearable technology have led to the development of a groundbreaking device called Stressomic, a biosensor capable of continuously monitoring stress-related hormones through sweat. Chronic stress, while sometimes beneficial, often leads to serious health issues such as anxiety, cardiovascular diseases, and inflammation. Understanding and managing stress effectively remains a challenge due to limitations in current measurement methods, which typically rely on subjective self-assessment or intermittent sensors measuring cortisol alone.
Stressomic addresses this gap by providing real-time analysis of multiple stress hormones—cortisol, epinephrine, and norepinephrine—using a biocompatible, skin-adherent patch. Validated through electrochemical assays and tested in various scenarios—including high-intensity exercise, exposure to stress-inducing images, and intake of calming supplements—the device demonstrated impressive sensitivity, detecting hormone fluctuations at picomolar levels thanks to advanced gold nanodendrite–decorated graphene electrodes.
During testing, the sensor successfully identified increases in norepinephrine during emotional stress, as well as changes in cortisol levels. Post-supplementation, the device recorded decreases in stress hormones, showcasing its potential to monitor therapeutic effects. Its ability to distinguish distinct temporal hormone patterns opens possibilities for personalized stress management, mental health applications, and sports performance optimization.
Researchers believe Stressomic could revolutionize how stress and its long-term effects are monitored, enabling more precise and noninvasive tracking of physiological and psychological stress responses. This innovation marks a significant step toward integrating continuous stress hormone monitoring into everyday health and wellness routines, offering valuable insights for clinicians, athletes, and individuals seeking better stress control.
