Researchers from Northwestern University have developed a groundbreaking wireless, wearable device that can monitor biomarkers in sweat, offering a new approach to managing cystic fibrosis (CF) at home. Created in collaboration with Epicore Biosystems, the device resembles a sticker and can accurately measure sweat chloride and volume—key indicators used in diagnosing and tracking CF. This technology aims to replicate the accuracy of laboratory chloride sweat tests, currently the gold standard for CF diagnosis, but with the added convenience of remote, real-time monitoring.

The study involved 20 adults with CF and seven healthy controls, who performed standard sweat tests in clinical settings and then used the device during five remote exercise sessions over two weeks. The results demonstrated that the wearable patch's measurements closely matched laboratory tests, confirming its potential for reliable at-home use. The device's design allows physicians to analyze sweat chloride levels via smartphone or tablet images, which can assist in tailoring treatments, especially for patients on CFTR modulator drugs that improve protein function and disease outcomes.

Dr. Manu Jain, senior author of the study, emphasized the device's significance in providing consistent, non-invasive monitoring—crucial for optimizing therapy and disease management. He also highlighted its potential to increase access in rural and resource-limited areas where traditional sweat testing is less available. Future research will focus on integrating the patch into clinical decisions and exploring its use in broader screening applications.

Overall, this innovative sweat patch promises to enhance cystic fibrosis care by enabling easier, more frequent monitoring outside of clinical laboratories, potentially improving patient outcomes and quality of life.
