Recent research from Amsterdam UMC highlights the numerous benefits of video consultations in healthcare. The study found that virtual meetings between patients and surgeons are just as effective as traditional in-person visits when it comes to information exchange, particularly before major surgeries. The 'VIDEOGO' trial involved 112 patients across two Dutch hospitals, split into groups receiving either virtual or face-to-face consultations. Results showed that patients absorbed the same amount of critical information regardless of the consultation format, and satisfaction levels remained high among both patients and healthcare providers.

In addition to being equally effective, video consultations offer significant practical advantages. Patients save approximately two hours per appointment, mainly by eliminating travel and waiting times. They also avoid travel costs and parking fees while contributing to environmental sustainability, as the carbon emissions from virtual visits are 99% lower than those from physical hospital visits. The study emphasizes that these consultations have the potential to increase healthcare accessibility, especially for patients facing long travel distances or mobility challenges.

Healthcare professionals appreciate the convenience and comfort of virtual consultations. Many patients prefer discussing their conditions from the familiarity of their home environment, which can enhance communication and understanding. Leading surgeons and digital health experts support integrating video calls into routine practice, emphasizing their role in creating a more sustainable, efficient, and future-proof healthcare system.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, hospitals rapidly expanded their telehealth capabilities, revealing the potential for wider adoption. Despite initial hesitations, the research strongly supports the continued use of video consultations beyond the pandemic due to their proven effectiveness, cost savings, and ecological benefits.
