A recent study conducted by the University of Southampton has shed light on what patients in the UK truly desire from their general practitioners (GPs). The research highlights that patients value more than quick appointments; they seek meaningful connections, better communication, and greater influence over how they access care. Among the top demands are improved accessibility, with patients advocating for simpler appointment booking processes, including online options and clearer phone services.

Despite NHS efforts to promote digital consultations, many patients still prefer face-to-face appointments, viewing them as the best way to build trust and confidence with their doctors. Continuity of care is also critical; many patients wish to choose and see the same GP regularly to maintain a consistent relationship. The study notes that being directed to nurses or pharmacists instead of GPs when doctors are unavailable diminishes trust and satisfaction.

Patients also want clear information about the roles of different healthcare professionals and want their care journeys to be well-informed. Additionally, proximity and comfort are essential; patients prefer surgeries close to home with welcoming, calm waiting areas.

The research suggests that simply increasing the number of GP appointments, as recently announced, is insufficient. Effective healthcare provision should focus on understanding and meeting fundamental patient needs, which include personalized care, accessible services, and respectful relationships. The findings call for a shift in NHS priorities from solely measuring satisfaction to truly addressing what patients want from their primary care experience.
