Trader Joe's Recalls Garlic Cheese Curds Over Listeria Contamination Risk

Trader Joe's has recalled Face Rock Creamery's garlic cheese curds due to Listeria contamination. Learn about the risks, affected products, and safety tips.
Trader Joe's has issued a recall for a specific batch of its garlic cheese curds due to potential contamination with the bacteria Listeria monocytogenes. The affected product is Face Rock Creamery's Vampire Slayer Garlic Cheese Curds, which was sold at Trader Joe's stores in Northern California and Northern Nevada. The recall was announced on June 20 and applies to packages marked with the 'Use BY 082925' date.
The recall was initiated after routine testing revealed the presence of Listeria in the cheese product. Although no illnesses have been reported thus far, health authorities emphasize the risks associated with Listeria, particularly for pregnant women, newborns, older adults, and individuals with weakened immune systems. Symptoms of listeriosis can include fever, diarrhea, headache, and in severe cases, confusion or seizures.
Consumers who purchased the affected cheese are urged to discard it or return it for a full refund. The product was distributed across Trader Joe's locations in California—including Monterey and Fresno—and in Nevada, including Carson City, Reno, and Sparks.
Face Rock Creamery, based in Bandon, Oregon, has stated that it is working with regulators and distribution partners to investigate the source of contamination. The FDA, alongside the Oregon Department of Agriculture, is involved in the investigation.
Listeria bacteria are commonly associated with soft cheeses, deli meats, hot dogs, and unpasteurized milk, but can also be found in raw vegetables and smoked seafood. While most healthy individuals recover without issues, vulnerable populations should exercise caution.
Trader Joe's encourages customers with questions to contact their customer relations team at 626-599-3817 or visit their website. For further details, customers can read the full recall announcement on Trader Joe's official site.
This recall underscores the importance of food safety testing and vigilance in preventing foodborne illnesses. Staying informed about recalls can help consumers protect themselves and their families.
