Sprout Organics has announced an expanded recall of its 3.5-ounce sweet potato, apple, and spinach baby food pouches after discovering that some batches may contain elevated levels of lead. This voluntary recall originally started on September 16 and now includes additional lots that were sold online through Walgreens and various independent retailers across 28 states. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has warned that prolonged exposure to lead can adversely affect a child's learning and development, and even low levels of exposure can increase blood lead levels, which may pose health risks.

Parents are advised to check the lot codes printed on the back of the product pouches to identify recalled items. The affected lot codes include:

  • Lot 4212: Best by October 29, 2025
  • Lot 4213: Best by October 30, 2025
  • Lot 4282: Best by December 4, 2025
  • Lot 4310: Best by February 4, 2026

Consumers should stop feeding these pouches to children immediately and return them for a refund. Thankfully, no illnesses have been reported related to this recall, and no other products from Sprout Organics are affected. For inquiries, consumers can contact the company at 510-833-6089 or via email at info@sproutorganics.com.

This recall highlights the importance of scrutinizing baby food products for potential contamination and underscores regulatory efforts to ensure the safety of infant nutrition. For a full list of the affected states and additional information, visit the FDA's official recall notice.
