Recent research conducted by experts from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai reveals significant vulnerabilities in popular AI chatbots used in healthcare. These tools, while promising, are prone to propagating false medical information, especially when presented with fabricated patient scenarios. The study demonstrates that AI models can confidently repeat and elaborate on fictitious medical details inserted into prompts, which could potentially mislead both clinicians and patients.

Importantly, the researchers found that implementing a simple warning prompt—reminding the AI that the information might be inaccurate—substantially reduced the prevalence of hallucinated or false responses. In their experiments, fictional patient scenarios with fabricated conditions or symptoms were used to test the models, both with and without safety prompts. Without guidance, the chatbots often fleshed out and confirmed fabricated details, risking misinformation. However, with the added cautionary prompt, the occurrence of such errors was cut nearly in half.

Lead author Dr. Mahmud Omar emphasized that AI chatbots can be easily misled by even a single false term, which can trigger detailed, fictitious explanations. The study suggests that prompts or safeguards designed into these AI systems can serve as critical tools for improving safety and accuracy. The investigators used controlled experiments—applying fake medical terms to scenarios—to evaluate how different models handle disinformation.

Dr. Eyal Klang highlighted that while AI tools hold great potential in healthcare, their current limitations include a susceptibility to confidently spreading misinformation, whether accidental or malicious. The findings underscore the importance of integrating safety features and human oversight into AI medical applications to prevent the spread of harmful falsehoods. The team’s goal moving forward is to refine these safety measures, test them on real patient data, and develop robust protocols for clinical deployment.

This research brings attention to a vital yet often overlooked aspect of AI technology in medicine—the AI’s vulnerability to misinformation and hallucination attacks. As AI integration in health care accelerates, implementing and testing safeguards will be crucial for ensuring reliable and trustworthy support for clinicians and patients alike.
