Recent research indicates a concerning increase in infant mortality rates in states that have implemented stricter abortion laws following the landmark June 2022 Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health decision. The study, published in the American Journal of Public Health, analyzed data from the CDC spanning 2018 to 2023, revealing a 7.2% rise in infant deaths in these states. This increase affects both newborns—those less than a day old—and infants between one month and one year of age, with the latter experiencing a 9.3% rise in excess deaths.

The research compared changes before and after new abortion restrictions were enacted, highlighting that states with these laws saw significant upticks in infant mortality, regardless of whether they included health exceptions intended to permit abortions to save the mother's life or in cases of fetal abnormalities. Interestingly, the presence of such exceptions did not mitigate the rise in infant deaths.

The findings underscore the ongoing landscape of abortion rights in the U.S., where over 20 states have enacted bans or restrictions that were not permitted under Roe v. Wade, while others have moved to protect access. The study emphasizes the importance of examining the public health ramifications of these legal changes, as the data suggests that restrictions may have unintended adverse effects on infant health.

While the causal mechanisms remain unclear—since the increase in mortality extends beyond immediate perinatal issues—these findings raise concerns about the broader impacts of abortion legislation on infant health outcomes. Further research is necessary to explore how these laws influence various population groups and to determine the underlying causes of the observed increase in infant deaths.

Overall, this study highlights the need for careful evaluation of the consequences of abortion laws, as they may influence not only reproductive rights but also the health and survival of infants across the nation.
