A new AI program developed by Cedars-Sinai shows promise in reducing hospitalizations for heart failure patients through remote blood pressure monitoring and personalized treatment advice.

Recent innovations in remote patient monitoring combined with artificial intelligence (AI) are transforming the management of heart failure. A groundbreaking study from Cedars-Sinai Medical Center introduces an AI-powered program designed to help reduce hospital admissions among heart failure patients. The study involved 50 patients diagnosed with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction, a condition where the heart's left ventricle becomes too weak to efficiently pump blood.

Over a three-month period, participants used a smartphone app to send blood pressure readings from home to their cardiologists. The AI software, dubbed HF-AI, analyzed these measurements and provided real-time treatment recommendations, including medication adjustments or additions, based on established heart failure guidelines. Trained with data from Cedars-Sinai patients and supplemented with international standards, HF-AI aimed to support clinicians in optimizing therapy.

The results were promising: cardiologists accepted the AI-generated medication suggestions over 90% of the time, leading to more than doubling the use of guideline-directed heart failure medications. Importantly, the program significantly reduced hospitalizations, dropping from 23 hospitalizations in the six months prior to intervention to just 6 in the following six months — a 74% decrease.

Dr. Raj Khandwalla, the study’s lead author, emphasized the potential impact: "By translating home blood pressure data into tailored treatment advice, HF-AI enables earlier medication fine-tuning and helps keep more patients out of the hospital. Heart failure patients are among our most vulnerable, and this technology offers new hope for better management and improved outcomes."

These encouraging findings are paving the way for broader application and further studies involving more Cedars-Sinai patients. As remote health management continues to evolve, the integration of AI tools like HF-AI could become standard practice, enhancing personalized care and reducing the burden on healthcare systems.
