Long COVID linked to Extended and Heavier Menstrual Bleeding

Research shows that Long COVID is associated with longer and heavier menstrual bleeding, without impairing ovarian function. The study explores mechanisms behind menstrual disturbances in affected individuals.
Recent research published in Nature Communications highlights a notable connection between Long COVID and alterations in menstrual patterns. While Long COVID does not seem to impair ovarian function, it is associated with increased menstrual duration, greater menstrual volume, and bleeding occurring between periods. The study analyzed data from approximately 12,000 individuals in the UK, including those with Long COVID, acute COVID, and those who have never contracted the virus. Findings indicate that symptoms of Long COVID tend to intensify during the peri-menstrual phase, suggesting a bidirectional relationship between the syndrome and menstrual disturbances.
Further investigation involving hormonal and endometrial samples from a small cohort revealed signs of inflammation within the endometrium and disrupted regulation of androgens, although ovarian function appeared unaffected. These insights imply that inflammation might be a key mechanism driving menstrual changes in Long COVID patients.
The research underscores the importance of understanding how Long COVID impacts reproductive health and highlights the need for larger, more diverse studies to confirm these findings and explore therapeutic options. Such knowledge could eventually lead to targeted treatments for those experiencing menstrual irregularities linked to Long COVID.
