Researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Silicate Research ISC, in partnership with B-COS GmbH, have developed a groundbreaking biodegradable face mask designed to stimulate the body's own production of collagen, offering a promising approach to skin rejuvenation. This two-component system activates upon application, releasing ortho-silicic acid from specially treated silica gel fabric, which penetrates the skin to encourage collagen synthesis.

The innovative mask, part of the Cosmetic Silica Mask (CoSiMa) project, aims to provide long-lasting anti-aging effects. Unlike traditional masks that temporarily hydrate or plump skin, this technology targets the root cause of aging skin—collagen loss. Clinical studies, including tests by the independent Dermatest institute, confirm that users experience reduced wrinkle depth and increased skin firmness and moisture after just a four-week period.

The system includes five pads that are moistened with an activation solution and then applied to different facial areas such as under the eyes, forehead, and mouth corners. The activation causes the release of ortho-silicic acid, which not only boosts collagen production but also enhances skin hydration and elasticity. The fully absorbed ingredients promote lasting skin rejuvenation.

A key feature of this mask is its sustainability. Composed of biodegradable materials and using natural silicon forms found in plants and organisms, it avoids harmful synthetic polymers and microplastics common in many cosmetic products. Once used, the mask disintegrates naturally, posing no environmental threat. This aligns with the increasing consumer demand for eco-friendly skincare options.

Market plans indicate that the product will be launched later this year under the brand CoSiMa, utilizing patented Fraunhofer RENACER technology. The mask represents a significant advancement in cosmetic science, combining natural ingredients with innovative delivery methods to effectively combat signs of aging while remaining environmentally responsible.
