Idaho Enacts Law Permitting Over-the-Counter Sale of Ivermectin

In April 2025, Idaho became the latest state to legalize the sale of ivermectin without a prescription, allowing pharmacies across the state to sell this controversial drug over the counter. This legislative change was driven by widespread demand from residents, including several lawmakers, who believe ivermectin can treat a variety of illnesses beyond its approved uses.

Historically, ivermectin has been recognized as an effective anti-parasitic medication for conditions such as river blindness and African eye worm. Nonetheless, during the COVID-19 pandemic, it gained popularity as a supposed treatment for the virus, fueled largely by misinformation and unverified claims. Despite missing evidence, many individuals used ivermectin in doses far exceeding recommended levels, risking severe side effects.

The law's passage aims to improve access in rural areas where healthcare resources are limited. Proponents argue that allowing over-the-counter sales provides more convenience and encourages patients to consult with pharmacists before taking the drug. However, there are concerns about safety, especially since ivermectin manufacturers currently do not produce labels that meet FDA standards for over-the-counter medications, which include proper warnings and instructions.
