Guinea Sees Over 200 Mpox Cases Since First Detection

Guinea reports over 200 cases of monkeypox since the outbreak was first detected, with continued spread in West Africa prompting global health concerns.
Health authorities in Guinea have reported that the number of mpox (monkeypox) cases has surpassed 200 since the initial outbreak was identified in September of last year. The recent surge in infections is part of a broader pattern observed in neighboring West African countries, where case numbers have been rising. As of July 2025, Guinea has recorded a total of 206 confirmed cases, including one fatality and 77 hospitalizations, according to the National Agency for Health Security (ANSS). The outbreak caused by the monkeypox virus, a member of the same virus family as smallpox, continues to pose a public health concern.
The virus can be transmitted through contact with infected animals or via close contact between humans. It manifests through symptoms such as fever, muscular aches, and distinctive skin lesions resembling boils, which can be severe and potentially fatal. Historically endemic to Central Africa, monkeypox gained international attention in May 2022 when the spread of clade 2 led to cases across multiple countries, predominantly affecting gay and bisexual men.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has maintained monkeypox as an international health emergency due to ongoing transmission and rising case counts in West Africa. Aside from Guinea, Sierra Leone has reported 3,350 cases with 16 deaths from January to late May, while Liberia had about 71 active cases in early June. Other countries including the Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda, and Burundi also report thousands of cases this year.
WHO continues to monitor the situation, emphasizing the importance of global awareness and preparedness to contain the spread of mpox. The recent developments in Guinea highlight the need for reinforced surveillance and response efforts in West Africa to prevent further escalation of the outbreak.
