FDA Implements New Post-Market Chemical Review Program to Enhance Food Safety

The FDA has launched a new proactive, science-based post-market chemical review program to enhance the safety and transparency of food additives and chemicals in the U.S. food supply.
Last week, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced a significant initiative aimed at improving transparency and strengthening the safety of chemicals used in the nation's food supply. This development introduces an enhanced review framework specifically targeting food chemicals available on the market, with a focus on substances that have raised consumer concerns. Traditionally, the FDA's postmarket review process was reactive, often initiated by citizen petitions or when scientific evidence pointed to potential hazards. Now, the agency is shifting towards a proactive, science-driven approach designed for long-term impact.
FDA Commissioner Martin A. Makary emphasized that the new system prioritizes resource allocation and the use of high-quality science to establish a systematic review program. This effort aims to increase consumer trust and ensure food safety, ultimately contributing to reducing the prevalence of chronic diseases. Over the coming months, the FDA plans to implement key actions such as releasing a draft prioritization scheme for public feedback and finalizing a comprehensive process for postmarket review, developed with stakeholder input.
The agency will also update its list of chemicals currently under review, which includes food additives like butylated hydroxyanisole, butylated hydroxytoluene, and azodicarbonamide, as well as scrutinized substances such as phthalates, propylparaben, and titanium dioxide. To expedite safety assessments, the FDA will fast-track reviews of chemicals already under scrutiny.
As part of its commitment to transparency, the FDA will continue providing regular updates on progress through its official website. This proactive review initiative aims to better protect consumers and promote healthier food choices through science-based regulation.
