The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a strong recommendation for nicotine pouch manufacturers to adopt child-resistant packaging. This initiative aims to significantly reduce the risk of accidental ingestion by children, which has become a growing concern in recent years. Nicotine pouches often contain highly concentrated nicotine, posing serious health dangers to young children. Between April 2022 and March 2025, poison control centers in the U.S. recorded a 72% increase in exposure cases involving these products, with the majority of affected individuals being children under five years old.
Toxic effects from ingesting nicotine pouches can occur at surprisingly low doses—sometimes as little as 1 to 4 milligrams of nicotine—and can be life-threatening. The colorful, fruity flavors and vibrant packaging of nicotine pouches can resemble candy, making them particularly attractive and accessible to children. Recognizing the urgent need for safety measures, the FDA has emphasized the importance of secure storage in its guidance.
The agency advises consumers to keep nicotine pouches in their original packaging and store them in places inaccessible to children. In cases of accidental ingestion, immediate medical attention is crucial. Symptoms of nicotine poisoning may include confusion, vomiting, and loss of consciousness. If ingestion occurs, calling Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 is recommended.
