Our digestive system operates less efficiently during sleep, especially at night, because our bodies are biologically wired to rest during these hours. High-fat and high-protein foods like cheese slow down digestion, which can lead to discomfort and impact sleep quality.

Research indicates that eating close to bedtime can reduce sleep quality, particularly affecting REM sleep—the stage associated with vivid dreaming. Poor sleep quality often results in more awakenings, which increases the likelihood of recalling dreams or nightmares. Individuals with lactose intolerance may experience even more pronounced sleep disruptions due to digestive discomfort when consuming dairy at night.

While there is no direct evidence that cheese causes nightmares, it can influence sleep quality and the likelihood of experiencing vivid dreams if digestion is impaired. To mitigate potential disturbances, sleep hygiene guidelines recommend avoiding heavy meals, including cheese, at least two hours before bed.
