In a significant safety alert, nearly 5 million above-ground swimming pools have been recalled nationwide after reports of tragic drownings involving nine young children over the past two decades. These pools, particularly those measuring 48 inches or taller, are equipped with compression straps that can form a foothold, allowing children to access the pool without supervision, which has led to multiple fatalities.

The affected children ranged in age from 22 months to 3 years old, with incidents reported across states including California, Texas, Florida, Wisconsin, and Missouri from 2007 to 2022. Additionally, there were at least three other incidents between 2011 and 2012 where children managed to access the pools through the straps.

Manufactured primarily in China, these pools are produced by well-known companies such as Bestway International Ltd., Intex Recreation Corp., and Polygroup North America Inc. They were sold at major retailers like Walmart, Target, Sears, Lowe's, Toys "R" Us, Costco, and online platforms including Amazon and the brands' own websites. The price range of these pools spans from $400 to $1,000.

The recall emphasizes the presence of compression straps around the pools, which can serve as a step ladder for children. To mitigate risks, owners of these pools are advised to contact the manufacturers for free repair kits. The kits include a rope that attaches to the pool’s support poles and encircles the pool, reducing the likelihood of children gaining unintentional access.

Consumers are urged to keep children away from the pools until repairs are completed or to drain the pools entirely. For additional safety, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recommends reviewing pool safety guidelines. Owners can reach out to the manufacturers—Bestway, Intex, and Polygroup—for further assistance and repair instructions.

This safety recall underscores the importance of vigilant supervision and proper safety measures to prevent childhood drownings in backyard pools. Ensuring pools are equipped with safety features and inaccessible to children is critical in reducing such tragic incidents.
