This practice has gained popularity on social media platforms like TikTok, where some claim it helps reduce snoring and improve sleep quality. However, medical experts warn against this trend due to potential health risks and lack of solid scientific backing.

While some believe that taping the mouth can prevent mouth breathing and thus enhance sleep, studies are limited and show minimal benefits. Dr. Kimberly Hutchison, a sleep medicine specialist, emphasizes that the risks—such as worsening sleep disorders like sleep apnea or even causing suffocation—far outweigh any potential advantages.

Breathing through the nose is naturally more beneficial because the nose filters dust and allergens, preventing them from entering the lungs. Mouth breathing, especially at night, can result in dry mouth, throat irritation, bad breath, and oral health issues. It is also associated with increased snoring.

Experts recommend caution before using mouth tape and advise seeking other solutions. Effective approaches include using prescribed mouth guards or continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machines, especially for those diagnosed with sleep issues. Lifestyle changes like quitting smoking or losing weight can also improve breathing during sleep.

Persistent mouth breathing may be a symptom of serious conditions such as obstructive sleep apnea, which causes breathing interruptions during sleep. This disorder is linked to poor sleep quality and has long-term health implications.
