Artificial Intelligence Reduces Complications and Readmissions in Colorectal Cancer Surgery

A new AI-based system supports colorectal cancer surgeries, reducing complications, readmissions, and healthcare costs through personalized treatment planning.
Recent research indicates that implementing an artificial intelligence (AI) tool during colorectal cancer surgeries significantly lowers the incidence of postoperative complications and diminishes the rate of patient readmissions. Developed through a collaboration between the Center for Surgical Science at Zealand University Hospital and the University of Copenhagen, this AI-based system utilizes comprehensive Danish health register data to support clinical decision-making. The study, published in Nature Medicine, involved testing the AI on 1,000 patients and demonstrated a 32%–36% reduction in surgical complications and a 35% decrease in readmission cases.
The AI tool offers personalized treatment plans, assists in preoperative preparations, and guides post-operative care—such as tailoring physical training and nutritional support, inspired by the international PREHAB project. Notably, the greatest benefits were observed among the most vulnerable patients, indicating the tool's potential to enhance outcomes for high-risk groups.
The study underscores the potential of digital tools to make cancer treatment more precise and cost-effective. For instance, the use of AI was associated with an estimated healthcare cost saving of approximately DKK 18,000 per patient by reducing the need for extensive healthcare services.
Furthermore, the AI system can predict one-year survival rates, helping clinicians identify patient risk profiles and customize therapy accordingly. This approach exemplifies how Danish data and digital tools can lead to more personalized, efficient cancer care. The research team plans to expand the AI's application to other cancers, including lung, kidney, bladder, and ovarian cancers, in future trials. This innovative development not only benefits patient recovery and safety but also offers significant economic advantages for the healthcare system.
