In a significant safety alert, Midea is recalling over 1.7 million of its window air conditioning units amid concerns about mold contamination. The recall covers models including U Window Air Conditioners and U+ Window Air Conditioners, which were manufactured and sold between March 2020 and May 2025. The recall was prompted by reports of a drainage malfunction that allows water to pool inside the units, creating ideal conditions for mold growth.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has received at least 152 reports related to mold buildup in these units, with 17 consumers experiencing health issues such as coughing, sore throats, and respiratory infections, likely due to mold exposure. These units were sold at prominent retailers like Best Buy, Costco, and Home Depot, costing between $280 and $500. Nearly 46,000 units were also sold in Canada under various brands, including Comfort Aire, Danby, Frigidaire, Insignia, Keystone, LBG Products, Mr. Cool, Perfect Aire, and Sea Breeze.

Consumers are advised to check if their air conditioner model is part of the recall through the official channels. Midea offers a full refund or a free repair service. Customers can return their units with a provided free shipping label or cut the power cord and send a photo for a refund.

This recall underscores the importance of proper maintenance and timely inspections of home appliances to prevent health risks associated with mold and water damage.
