Lessons from China's Success in Achieving Malaria-Free Status

China's achievement in becoming malaria-free in 2021 serves as a vital blueprint for global efforts to combat and eliminate malaria. Experts highlight that this success was driven by a comprehensive national strategy encompassing long-term, adaptable interventions such as widespread use of bed nets, indoor spraying, targeted drug administration, and continuous surveillance. These measures evolved to address changing risk factors across regions like Hainan, Yunnan, and the Huai River Basin, demonstrating that persistent and flexible strategies can overcome challenges even in highly endemic areas.

However, experts also caution that complacency can lead to setbacks. The case of the Huai River Basin illustrates how early success in the 1980s led to reduced surveillance and funding, which sparked a resurgence of malaria in the early 2000s. Reintroduction of control measures was necessary to restore progress, emphasizing the importance of sustained vigilance.

Moreover, international cooperation, real-time data sharing, and innovative financing models—such as regional banks and partnerships—are crucial for maintaining elimination gains. The collection of studies underscores that long-term commitment, consistent funding, and data-driven strategies are essential for sustaining malaria control and preventing resurgence.

As global health initiatives face potential funding reductions, notably with declining support for the Global Fund and GAVI, there is an urgent need for continued investment. China's experience offers valuable insights, proving that elimination is achievable through dedicated effort and adaptive, long-term strategies. The authors stress that eliminating malaria requires unwavering persistence and innovation, especially as nations aim for a future where malaria is no longer a threat.
