Extended Reality Boccia Enhances Rehabilitation Outcomes for Older Adults

Learn how an innovative extended reality version of boccia is improving rehabilitation outcomes and emotional well-being among older adults, offering a practical indoor exercise option with proven benefits.
Recent advancements in rehabilitation technology have introduced an innovative extension of the popular Paralympic sport, boccia, utilizing extended reality (XR) environments. Developed by a research team at Osaka Metropolitan University, this XR version of boccia is designed to be both engaging and practical for promoting motor and cognitive skills among older adults. The program was evaluated in a study published in PLOS One, where participants aged 65 and above experienced improved mood, vitality, and energy following sessions of XR boccia, traditional boccia, and treadmill walking. Interestingly, while overall muscle activity remained similar across exercises, an increase in activity of the rectus femoris muscle, which extends the knee, was observed during both types of boccia. Importantly, Boccia XR requires a smaller indoor space compared to traditional courts, making it suitable for hospitals and nursing homes. The study indicates that this technology not only benefits physical health but also offers emotional advantages, providing a feasible and enjoyable rehabilitation option for older adults. Future research aims to explore long-term effects and expand the application to larger populations.
