Expert-Fitted Hearing Aids Show Greater Effectiveness Than Over-the-Counter Options

A recent study reveals that hearing aids fitted by audiologists provide better outcomes than over-the-counter devices, emphasizing the importance of professional fitting for optimal hearing health.
Recent research indicates that hearing aids fitted by audiologists deliver superior results compared to over-the-counter (OTC) devices, despite the latter being somewhat effective. A study published online on May 15, 2025, in JAMA Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, analyzed outcomes among adults aged over 55 with mild to moderate hearing loss who had no prior experience with hearing aids.
The study involved 245 participants who were randomly assigned to different groups based on service models and technology levels. These included audiologist-fitted prescription hearing aids following best practices, limited-service OTC options assisted by audiologists, and completely independent OTC use. The two technology levels tested were high-end devices with advanced features and more basic, low-end devices.
Results demonstrated that the group receiving audiologist-fitted hearing aids (AUD model) achieved significantly higher scores on the Glasgow Hearing Aid Benefit Profile (GHABP), a measure of hearing aid benefit, compared to OTC groups. Specifically, the AUD group's scores were approximately 0.33 to 0.32 points higher than OTC groups. Notably, no significant difference was observed in outcomes between the high-end and low-end devices within the same service model, nor was there any interaction between the type of technology and service model.
The findings suggest that while OTC hearing aids—especially when supplemented with some audiologist services—are effective, they do not match the outcomes achieved through direct audiologist intervention. As hearing loss affects many aging populations, the study highlights the importance of professional fitting and customization for optimal hearing health outcomes.
This research was conducted by Yu-Hsiang Wu, M.D., Ph.D., and colleagues from the University of Iowa and Vanderbilt University Medical Center. They emphasize that personalized fitting by trained audiologists enhances the benefits of hearing aids, potentially leading to improved quality of life for users.
