In a remarkable medical achievement, a young woman from Oxnard, California, successfully underwent a complex and high-risk surgery to remove a massive 40-pound tumor, just months before celebrating her wedding. Adriana Pulido, 24, faced a life-threatening condition that initially seemed insurmountable. Her ordeal began in April 2023, during a trip to Las Vegas, when she experienced severe stomach cramps. Although she initially dismissed the pain, it worsened rapidly, prompting her to seek medical attention upon her return. Diagnostic imaging revealed a large tumor on her right ovary, roughly the size of a small basketball. Surgeons initially removed the tumor, but subsequent scans identified a smaller tumor on her left ovary. Despite these interventions, her symptoms persisted, and a third, much larger tumor was discovered three months later, significantly exacerbating her condition. By May 2024, the tumor had grown to nearly 11 inches in size, weighing over 40 pounds and pressing against vital organs, including her heart and lungs. This growth limited her mobility, requiring her to use a wheelchair and oxygen therapy. Her case was complicated by a rare condition known as growing teratoma syndrome, which can occur following chemotherapy for germ cell tumors. The syndrome can cause tumors to grow rapidly and uncontrollably, further endangering vital structures. Recognizing the urgency, Pulido transferred her care to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, where Dr. Cristina Ferrone assembled an experienced surgical team to undertake what would be an extensive 14-hour operation. Due to the tumor's proximity to critical blood vessels, the surgery was extraordinarily delicate, carrying significant risks. To optimize her chances, Pulido was kept awake during part of the procedure, receiving local anesthesia and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) support to temporarily replace her heart and lung functions. Her ongoing stability was maintained by positioning her on an incline, and she remained conscious to help preserve vital signs. The operation was deemed a success, and within a week, her lungs had fully expanded, and her heart had returned to its proper position. Her recovery progressed rapidly, allowing her to breathe independently for the first time in months. A month post-surgery, Pulido demonstrated incredible strength and resilience, walking unaided through the hospital corridors—an extraordinary turnaround from her condition months earlier. Pulido’s journey was punctuated by personal milestones, including her engagement during the halftime show of the Super Bowl in February 2024. Her hopeful outlook and determination were vital to her recovery. Today, she walks down the aisle as a bride, embracing her renewed health and outlook. Pulido’s case highlights the importance of early detection, specialized surgical intervention, and the incredible resilience of patients facing life-threatening conditions. Her story is an inspiring example of medical innovation and personal bravery, demonstrating that with the right care and determination, even the most daunting health challenges can be overcome.
