Why ChatGPT Can't Replace Medical Diagnoses: Key Insights

Expert insights reveal that while ChatGPT can assist with medical information, it is not equipped to diagnose health conditions accurately, emphasizing the importance of consulting healthcare professionals.
As artificial intelligence continues to advance, many people turn to tools like ChatGPT for quick health advice. However, experts emphasize that ChatGPT cannot replace healthcare professionals when it comes to accurate diagnosis and medical decision-making. A recent study led by Ahmed Abdeen Hamed from Binghamton University, published in iScience, assessed ChatGPT's capabilities in understanding and providing medical information.
The study revealed that while ChatGPT can identify disease-related terms, prescription drugs, and genetic information with high accuracy—ranging from 88% to 97%—its performance diminishes when dealing with more complex, user-friendly, or casual language. The AI tends to simplify medical terminology to communicate more effectively with average users, but this can lead to misunderstandings.
One major limitation is ChatGPT’s difficulty in accurately linking vague or conversational symptom descriptions to potential medical causes. Its tendency to present information with unwarranted confidence poses significant health risks, especially because the AI does not communicate its certainty levels. This can mislead users into trusting incorrect information.
Recent surveys indicate that AI usage for health advice is on the rise. About 34% of U.S. adults have used ChatGPT at some point, with many encountering AI-generated health content during web searches. Nearly 17% of adults in 2024 reported using AI chatbots monthly for health information, notably among younger populations.
Medical professionals advise caution in using AI for health-related queries. While AI can be useful for providing general knowledge about diseases and medications, it should never be relied upon for diagnosing conditions or making treatment decisions. In emergencies, calling 911 or seeking immediate medical care remains essential.
Ultimately, ChatGPT and similar AI tools are valuable educational resources but are not substitutes for professional medical advice and diagnosis. Staying informed about their limitations ensures safer use of these emerging technologies.
