Vaccine experts who were recently dismissed by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services warn that recent leadership changes threaten decades of immunization progress and public health safety.

Recently, a group of highly experienced vaccination specialists voiced serious concerns following their removal from advisory roles within the U.S. health system. These experts published an editorial emphasizing that recent actions by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), under the leadership of Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., are weakening the U.S. immunization program. This overhaul began after Kennedy fired all 17 members of a key vaccine advisory committee, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), accusing them of conflicts of interest. Two days later, he appointed eight new members, including several known vaccine skeptics, such as a biochemist linked to anti-vaccine movements. Such unprecedented changes have sparked criticism from Democratic officials and health authorities, who argue that these decisions threaten the stability and credibility of national immunization efforts.

The ousted ACIP members expressed their concerns in a published editorial in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), warning that the sudden dismissal and replacement of the committee players, alongside reductions in CDC immunization staff, have critically compromised the program. They highlighted that these moves diminish institutional knowledge essential to the success of vaccination initiatives and criticized the recent COVID-19 vaccine policy changes announced by Kennedy, which they believe bypass standard review processes. The experts warn that these destabilizing actions could undo decades of progress in immunization, jeopardize public access to vital vaccines, and increase the risk of preventable diseases.

Kennedy's tenure has been marked by promoting COVID-19 conspiracy theories and questioning vaccine safety and efficacy. His organization, the Children's Health Defense, has propagated debunked claims linking vaccines to autism. Since taking the helm at HHS in February 2025, Kennedy has begun a significant overhaul of health policies, raising concerns among health professionals about the potential impact on public health initiatives.
