Progress in Texas' Measles Outbreak as US Cases Slightly Increase to 1,024

Texas's measles outbreak is showing signs of slowing, but the US case count continues to rise, highlighting the ongoing importance of vaccination efforts to prevent the spread of measles nationwide.
The recent measles outbreak in Texas appears to be easing, with fewer than 10 new cases reported in the past week. However, the overall number of cases across the United States continues to climb, reaching a total of 1,024 confirmed cases as of May 17, 2025. Texas still accounts for the majority of these cases, particularly concentrated in West Texas, where 718 cases have been recorded across 32 counties. The outbreak primarily originated in a close-knit, undervaccinated Mennonite community in Gaines County, which alone accounts for over 56% of Texas cases.
Hospitalizations have remained steady at 93 individuals. Tragically, there have been fatalities linked to the outbreak, including an 8-year-old child in Texas and an unvaccinated adult in New Mexico, both of whom succumbed to complications related to measles.
The outbreak is not isolated to Texas. Canada reports significant outbreaks in Ontario, Alberta, and the Mexican state of Chihuahua, with thousands of cases and at least one death. North Dakota has seen 12 cases, some linked to imported infections, and outbreaks continue in several other states including Indiana, Michigan, Montana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Tennessee.
Health officials emphasize that measles remains highly contagious and is primarily spread through airborne transmission when an infected person coughs or sneezes. Vaccination with the MMR vaccine is the most effective prevention method, providing herd immunity when coverage exceeds 95%. Despite the availability of vaccines, vaccination rates have declined nationwide, contributing to the resurgence.
Efforts continue to contain the outbreak through vaccination campaigns and public health initiatives. Experts stress the importance of vaccination and awareness, especially during the travel season when the risk of international importation of measles is higher. Individuals are encouraged to check their immunization status and seek vaccination if needed, to prevent further spread of this preventable disease.
