Spain's government has taken a significant step towards public health improvement by approving a proposal to ban smoking and vaping in various outdoor locations across the country. The initiative aims to restrict tobacco use in outdoor areas such as bar terraces, parks, outside educational institutions, concert venues, festivals, university campuses, medical centers, and transport stations. This measure seeks to reduce exposure to tobacco smoke and its associated health risks, including cancer.

The draft legislation also proposes actions to prevent minors from accessing tobacco products and aims to curb the advertising, promotion, and sponsorship of tobacco. If approved, these regulations could lead to a substantial decrease in tobacco consumption and exposure, aligning Spain with global efforts to combat smoking-related health issues.

The proposal is currently in the consultation phase and must undergo parliamentary approval before becoming law. The move is expected to face opposition from the hospitality sector, which benefits from outdoor dining, especially during Spain’s hot summer months. Currently, approximately 26% of Spanish adults smoke daily, highlighting the need for effective tobacco control measures.

This initiative underscores Spain's commitment to protecting public health and reducing the burden of tobacco-related diseases. For more details, visit the original report at Medical Xpress.
