A recent outbreak of salmonella has prompted the voluntary recall of over 1.7 million eggs distributed by the August Egg Company, affecting nine states and resulting in dozens of illnesses. The contaminated eggs, mainly brown organic and cage-free varieties, were sold between February and May and have been linked to nearly 80 reported cases of salmonella infections, with at least 21 individuals hospitalized. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a notice on June 6, warning consumers about the recall, which covers products distributed in Arizona, California, Illinois, Indiana, Nebraska, New Mexico, Nevada, Washington, and Wyoming.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has confirmed that the strain of salmonella associated with these eggs has caused illness in 79 people across seven states. Salmonella infection can lead to symptoms such as diarrhea, fever, vomiting, stomach cramps, and dehydration. While most individuals recover within a week, vulnerable groups like young children, older adults, and those with weakened immune systems are at greater risk of severe illness.

Health officials advise consumers to inspect their egg cartons for specific brand and plant codes or Julian dates listed on the packaging through the FDA and CDC websites. Individuals who have purchased the recalled eggs are recommended to dispose of them or return them to the point of purchase. Additionally, thorough cleaning of kitchen surfaces, utensils, and containers that may have come into contact with the eggs is crucial to prevent further contamination.

This incident underscores the importance of food safety and proper handling practices to prevent outbreaks. For more detailed information on salmonella, refer to the Mayo Clinic's resources.
