Dermarite Industries has announced an expanded voluntary recall of several over-the-counter skincare products, including creams, soaps, and sanitizers, after discovering potential contamination with Burkholderia cepacia complex bacteria. This bacteria is known to cause severe infections, especially in individuals with weakened immune systems.

Initially, the recall was announced on July 16, but recent updates have included additional product lots and wider distribution across the United States and Puerto Rico, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The contaminated products include various skin creams, antiseptic lotions, hand sanitizers, and diaper rash creams, such as 4-N-1 no-rinse wash cream, DermaCerin moisturizing cream, DermaFungal anti-fungal cream, Gel Rite instant hand sanitizer, and several others.

Health authorities warn consumers that while healthy individuals may experience minor skin irritations, those with compromised immune systems are at significant risk of developing more serious infections like sepsis, which can be life-threatening. As a precaution, all affected products should be destroyed, and consumers are advised to contact DermaRite directly at 888-943-5190 or via email for instructions.

If any symptoms develop after using these products, individuals should seek medical assistance immediately. Further details, including a complete list of affected products and lot numbers, can be found on DermaRite’s official website.

This recall underscores the importance of monitoring skincare product safety and ensuring proper handling and disposal of potentially contaminated items.
