Dental Clinic Enhances Confidence and Smiles in Underserved Communities

Cura Smiles, a free dental clinic in San Diego, is transforming lives by providing essential oral health services to underserved and recovering populations, enhancing their confidence and well-being.
A dedicated dental clinic is making significant strides in providing free oral health care to underserved populations, including those in addiction recovery, low-income individuals, and the homeless. Established in 2017 and operating within the Mid-City Church of the Nazarene, Cura Smiles offers essential dental services through a team of volunteer dentists and hygienists. The clinic features four operatories and is open two to three times weekly, performing procedures ranging from cleanings and fillings to extractions and dentures. Recently, the clinic received a generous boost in funding from local philanthropic organizations, equipping it with new dental chairs and modern equipment to better serve its clients.
Many patients, like Cheryl Martinez, have experienced transformative changes through Cura Smiles. After losing her dentures during a relapse, she was able to quickly secure an appointment, emphasizing how critical dental care is to her reintegration into society. Such services are crucial because they address the gap in dental coverage, as Medicare does not include dental benefits, and Medi-Cal limits coverage for dentures.
Cura Smiles focuses on removing barriers to oral health, recognizing its importance for overall well-being. Oral diseases are linked to serious health issues such as heart disease and diabetes, and marginalized communities often face high obstacles in accessing dental services due to costs and availability. The clinic partners with local organizations including the San Diego Rescue Mission and Youth Assistance Coalition to refer and support clients.
The growth of Cura Smiles reflects its increasing impact, having served over 700 clients and performed more than 4,300 procedures since inception. Its founder, Dr. Thomas Fitzpatrick, was inspired by his work in Nicaragua and aims to improve access to dental care for those who need it most—entirely free of charge. The ongoing support from grants and donations is vital to sustain and expand this vital service.
As dental health is vital to overall health and confidence, Cura Smiles continues to empower individuals, helping them smile brighter and lead healthier lives.
