Recent advancements in surgical technology have significantly improved outcomes in jaw reconstruction procedures, especially for patients recovering from head and neck cancers. The use of computer-aided design and manufacturing (CAD/CAM) has emerged as a key innovation, enabling surgeons to enhance precision and reduce complications.

A comprehensive study published in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery explored the long-term benefits of integrating CAD/CAM into free fibula flap reconstruction of the mandible. The study analyzed data from 215 patients treated between 2012 and 2021, with 136 undergoing CAD/CAM-assisted procedures and 79 receiving conventional reconstruction. Findings indicated that CAD/CAM technology contributes to reduced operating room time—saving approximately an hour—and lowers the incidence of incision dehiscence.

Furthermore, long-term outcomes demonstrated that patients who received CAD/CAM-assisted surgery were 60% less likely to require hardware removal, a common complication in jaw reconstruction. While initial postoperative complication rates were similar across groups, the precision of CAD/CAM facilitated procedures resulted in fewer long-term hardware issues. Surgeons highlighted that the technology streamlines bony adjustments and hardware placement, contributing to improved patient outcomes.

Although CAD/CAM introduces additional costs, its benefits in surgical accuracy, efficiency, and long-term complication reduction suggest it could be a valuable investment. Future research focusing on cost-effectiveness and hardware maintenance is necessary to fully establish its clinical and economic advantages.

This technological approach exemplifies how innovative tools are transforming reconstructive surgery, offering hope for enhanced recovery and quality of life for patients undergoing complex jaw repairs.
