Recent research indicates a significant association between chronic kidney disease (CKD) and an elevated risk of losing teeth. A study published online on July 20, 2025, in the journal Renal Failure, highlights that individuals with CKD are more likely to have fewer than 20 teeth compared to those without the condition. This connection was identified through data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES), which analyzed over 16,000 adults aged 40 and above.

The study's authors, Na-Yeong Kim and Ki-Ho Chung from South Korea, adjusted for various variables such as age, gender, household income, education, habits like smoking and alcohol consumption, and health conditions including hypertension and diabetes. They found that the prevalence of CKD was significantly higher among those with fewer than 20 teeth, with an odds ratio of 1.34, suggesting a strong link.

The researchers emphasize the importance of integrating oral health into overall health management, especially for individuals with CKD. They advocate for comprehensive prevention programs that include oral health improvement efforts. However, they also note that further large-scale, long-term studies are necessary to clarify the causal relationship between kidney disease and tooth loss.

This emerging evidence underscores the importance of maintaining good oral hygiene and regular dental checkups as part of a holistic approach to managing chronic health conditions like CKD, promoting better overall health outcomes.
