A newly developed assessment tool is transforming how we evaluate playgrounds and outdoor learning spaces by acknowledging that controlled risk-taking can be beneficial for children's growth. Developed by Professor David Eager at the University of Technology Sydney, this innovative approach considers both the potential hazards and the developmental benefits of risky play.

Traditionally, play environments have been designed to minimize danger, often at the expense of challenge and adventure. However, Eager's research underscores that over-safety can hinder essential aspects of children's physical, emotional, and social development, and may reduce resilience. The new tool leverages over 30 years of expertise to help educators, parents, designers, and safety officials make balanced decisions.

The assessment uses two 5x5 matrices to rate the likelihood and outcomes of risks involved in various play activities. By comparing potential hazards against their educational and developmental benefits—such as confidence, coordination, and emotional resilience—decision-makers can identify which risks are acceptable and which should be minimized or eliminated.

This paradigm shift aligns with recent international standards, like ISO 4980:2023, which integrate benefit–risk analysis in safety assessments for recreational activities. Such measures recognize that engaging in challenging play promotes vital skills, preparing children for real-world challenges.

Eager emphasizes that overly safety-focused environments can lead children to seek risky behavior elsewhere and that appropriately managed risks are crucial for fostering independence and resilience. As communities seek to create nurturing spaces for children, this integrated approach offers a practical framework to balance safety with development.
